Sam's Story

Early inspiration

Had there been a “least likely to become a health coach & personal trainer” category in his high school yearbook, his photo would have no doubt accompanied it. Despite being extremely passionate about sports as a youth, especially baseball and football, he was thin and asthmatic, the personification of the Charles Atlas’ “I was a 98-pound weakling” cartoon ads. To this day he painfully remembers being barely able to bench press 65 lbs. in PE class as a high school junior. Sam’s disdain for running and calisthenics, coupled with a well-honed lack of discipline, prevented him from even considering trying out for high school sports.

Developing strategy

From discipline to routine

Sam developed a post-college routine of resistance training and running, which he continued until his late 50’s when he discovered functional fitness and HIIT. Having spent much of his life underestimating or completely ignoring the importance of sound nutrition, Sam’s interest in nutrition greatly intensified as the link between a proper diet and a healthy body and mind became increasingly evident. At the age of 62 he discovered F3, a peer-led, bootcamp fitness movement and was a devout 5x per week participant until a severe hamstring injury forced him to abandon running and refocus solely on

resistance training, which he participates in four times per week with a small group of fellow F3 devotees. Workouts begin at 5:45am in his garage, known affectionately as The House of Pain.

However, he developed a love of tennis as a high school junior, managed to make his junior college tennis team as a walk-on, and tolerated daily conditioning sessions of three-mile runs, medicine ball weaves, and sprints prior to team practices. Necessity being the mother of invention, a near physical altercation in college developed into the realization that he needed to add some muscle to his fat/skinny frame and, as a result, he developed a keen interest in resistance training and experienced immediate, tangible results.
